I’ve been researching multi-master replication for my Rails applications. I’ve been interested in the idea ever since reading about it in “Q&A: The adventures of scaling, Stage 1”. However one aspect that I never understood was how one actually configured a Rails application to take advantage to take advantage of such a setup, or even a master-slave setup. So I decided to do some research on the subject.
Setups requiring code changes and installing gems or plugins
I want to keep these short because I feel they are a suboptimal solution for my needs. If at all possible I’d rather not have the application know about the replication. That’s not to knock the hard work in these directions because there are definitely applications which could benefit from these solutions.
- Active Delegate - Multiple Database Connections in Ruby on Rails
- This is designed more for a master/slave setup where reads and writes are sent to different database servers.
- magic_multi_connections - Magic Multi-Connections: A “facility in Rails to talk to more than one database at a time”
- This gem is also able to handle master/slave setups but also could be used to do data partitioning across multiple databases.
- ActsAsReadonlyable - PLUGIN RELEASE: ActsAsReadonlyable
- This was also designed to handle a master/slave setup.
- Masochism - Master/Slave Databases with Ruby on Rails
- The most recent addition to this bunch, and yes, designed for master/slave setups.
- DynamicDatabaseChanger - Rails Database Loadbalancing with DynamicDatabaseChanger Example
- Finally, a plugin design for a multi-master setup. This plugin routes each request to a random database from a set of databases. No information is available on whether or how it handles failover.
- MysqlReplicationAdapter - Mysql Replication Adapter.
- This is an interesting approach as it takes the form of an ActiveRecord database adapter. It’s designed for a single write master and multiple read-only slaves setup.
Proxies
- SQLRelay
- This is a mature product, packaged in Debian and Ubuntu, supports most database backends, and supports load-balancing (both multi-master and master-slave).
- MySQL Proxy
- Supports failover and load-balancing (multi-master only; master/slave in apparently on the way) but is MySQL specific.
- HAProxy
- A TCP proxy that does not have failover capability apparently.
Conclusions
Using SQLRelay looks promising as it would make the database replication setup transparent to my rails applications. The documentation is somewhat confusing with regard to failover. SQLRelay doesn’t support “failover” meaning that it won’t add a hot-spare database if one goes down. It does, however, redistribute the load among the remaining servers which is what I want.
Thought it has been suggested that if one is using MySQL that MySQL Proxy is simpler to configure and use. It also would give the setup I desire. I may have to try both solutions to determine which I like better.
