I’ve read a lot of positive things about piston, a gem which can be used to manage plugins. Typically it’s used as a replacement for projects that use svn:externals to manage plugins from external repositories. I learned very quickly in my rails development work that svn:externals was an extremely problematic approach. So I tended to simply manage the plugins myself. I even went so far as to write a script which would alert me to updates in the plugins. However I decided that piston should be mature enough at this point to try in a project. Here’s how it went.
The first step was to install the gem, which at this time was 1.3.3. The gem installed without any problems with the following command:
gem install piston -y
The next step was to install some plugins using piston. For some of these I used the verbose -v option to get a better idea of what piston was doing.
piston import http://svn.streamlinedframework.org/branches/stable/streamlined/ vendor/plugins/streamlined/piston import http://dev.rubyonrails.org/svn/rails/plugins/exception_notification/ vendor/plugins/exception_notification/http://railsexpress.de/svn/plugins/sql_session_store/trunk
Then I committed the changes. There was no need to svn add the files as piston had already handled that.
svn commit
Then I ran a piston update which changed the version from HEAD to the last changed
piston update
Then I ran another commit:
svn commit
It seems that most of my maintenance can be done with these commands:
piston statuspiston updatepiston help
The piston help command gives details about the parameters that can be used with the various piston commands.
